Endowment Fund Grants To Be Awarded

Teachers, staff and parents at Thoreau are invited to apply for grants from the Thoreau Endowment Fund. Up to $1,425 will be available for grants for projects at Thoreau in the current school year.

A short form for grant applications is available in the school office, along with information about the endowment fund and the grants process. Grant applications are due by October 12. Grants will be awarded in early November by the grants committee.

For those who have not heard of the Thoreau Endowment Fund, it is a fund that has been established to make grants for creative and innovative projects which will promote teaching, learning and positive social interaction at Thoreau. Money for the fund has been raised primarily through the Bids for Kids auctions. The fund is one of many individual school endowment funds coordinated by the Foundation for Madison’s Public Schools.

This will be the second year grants will be made from the Thoreau fund. Last year, grants were awarded for four projects, including the use of hip hop music to teach math, development of a music curriculum for second grade, overhead math calculators for grades 3-5, and development of curriculum plans for the after-school foreign language classes.

Current members of the grants committee are Tom Bach, Rick Chandler, Steve Deller, Rosana Ellmann, Erin Weiss, Liz Fritz, Kelly McCann and Greg Vallee. Please contact any of them if you have questions.

We look forward to seeing the proposals for grants.
